Looking to get a little more distance and accuracy out of my p556., Sigg sales a piston assist 16 inch 556 barrel on their website. But I can’t get a hold of them to confirm that it will mount up with no modifications. I am new to this and was wondering if anybody had done this and what challenges they came up with.

Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.

I would check very carefully that it is actually for the Sig 556. Sig has not had parts or serviced these guns for years. The only barrels i can find on sigs website are variants for the mcx.

This is the only one I can find but there are no details on the site .
PISTON ASSY, 16 IN BARREL, 5.56 NATO
What do you think ? And would I need to change anything else ?

So i have located a 16” barrel to replace my 10” barrel on my sig p556 . Will I need to Modification any thing for the new barrel ? And is this something I should have taken to a gun smith? Any help would be appropriated.

I got the barrel from a guy that was selling his sig
556 and had an extra barrel that he planned on cutting down and never got around to . The barrel is threaded tho so I’m confused , it seems to just thread in , there is no locking nut . I have only hear about 1 guy ever doing it and it required a 5 foot cheater bar and they had to heat it up . May be this isn’t a good idea but I was really trying not to buy a whole new gun .

It is not as simple as threading out the old one and threading in the new one. It is extremely likely that the gas port will not index correctly, and the headspace will be wrong. Getting it out is hard, and that’s the easy part.

I was Worried about the gas port and head space, in your opinion it would be best just to get a new rifle ?

Absolutely. There are potential stupid legal issues with the conversion too, if you’re putting a buttstock on it. Because it’s still a “pistol”, per it’s original designation.

You should be able to get $900 for your pistol.

Just to address the legal issues, in the United States it’s legal to put a buttstock on a weapon originally designed as a pistol as long as the pistol has a barrel that’s 16 inches and the length of the firearm with the stock attached (even if folded) is greater than 26 inches.
