SIG 556 Rifles - HUGE Price Reduction - After the Rebate?

Like many of you, I was greatly tempted by the $300 rebate SIG SAUER put on the SIG 556 rifles. I actually had a gun shop hold a brand new SWAT model for me. At the time the list price was $1799, so with the rebate it would have cost $1499. I placed the gun on a 24 hour hold and after sleeping on it, decided not to buy the gun. It got to be March 8th and it took a lot of self-control to stay out of the gun shop that day.

So, I stop by today to grab some Federal Gold Medal Sierra Matchking HPBT 69 grain ammo in.223, and some .45 and 9mm self-defense ammo (all of which they have great prices on) and there it was - that tempting shiny SWAT model I had lusted after and almost took the plunge on.

So I slide on over and look at it, and I couldn't believe my eyes! There on the price tag was an unbelievable amount -- the shop had marked down all their 556s, and the SWAT model was only $1349 -- I checked with the store manager to make sure it was right (say what?) and it was. So, by passing up the rebate of $300, I now can buy the rifle for $450 less than it was before. And it was the cheapest price in my city before then -- another one elsewhere was $1999. I am still stunned, and a little bit perplexed. :?

Think about that -- this is a $650 difference in price in less than a week when compared to the higher priced store. $650!!

Every SIG 556 was marked at a lower price -- the ER was only $1099 - a week ago it was $1229, so with the rebate on that one you would come out ahead...thanks, SIG! :)

So now I am really glad I waited - $450 off previous best price trumps the rebate deal by an astonishing 50%! The rifle is now selling at 25% less than last week -- 25% less!

I can now buy a SWAT model for about the same price as I paid for the first 556 I bought back in 2007.

The recession must be having an impact on sales -- unless SIG is clearing out the factory unloading its inventory. [Please let it be for the SIG762 - please, please, please!!]

So now I am curious - anyone else on the forum seeing a drop in sticker price on 556s now that the rebate offer has ended?

I would guess that in order to ship the new piston ARs in meaningful quantities, they are having to drop prices to help retailers unload the backlog of 556s. This would free up the retailers cash to start stocking the new Sig line of piston ARs. Just a guess.
I got lucky I guess.. Got my SWAT for 909.00 with rebate and LEO.
Roger that got mine for the same $909 after rebate. LEO prices seem to be holding at what they were.
I wonder if they are going to drop the 556 all together. They rebate the rifles and then discount what is left.... possibly to get out of the 556 and into their own AR15?

I hope not, but I am concerned.
I just did a search on GA and the prices haven't budged.

I hope they don't do that!
BIG MISTAKE!

ARs ar everywhere. Lots of companies make 'em. The 556 is an interesting, different platform -- a GOOD one. I mean, for the non existance of the gas key itself, I think the Sig 556 is great!!!
It would be hoorible if Sig stopped making this gun.

I'm having a hard time following the logic. The retail stores buy the merchandise they sell, the merchandise is not on consignment from the manufacturer.
If I'm correct, your retailer has already paid for the merchandise, that's the reason the manufacturer offers a rebate, to help the retailer move the merchandise. It seems your retailer didn't move as much as he wanted to, and is now having a sale, which is good for the consumer.
Stock on shelves costs money. The longer the stock is there, the more money it takes, and ultimately it will be discounted to where it goes out the door. Usually anyway....

I wouldn't be alarmed over one shops' pricing as far as the longevity of the 556.
What the gun shop said was this was not them dropping their prices -- this was SIG SAUER lowering their prices across the board on all 556s. The handguns were still the same pricing as before.

I think they moved all their inventory under the rebate program, and had new guns on the shelf that they had paid less to obtain, hence the lower prices.

If you're not seeing a price drop, I think your gun store is holding out for a little extra profit by playing the market price game in your area...not that I blame them any....

I'll check some of the other shops in the area (the ones with higher prices) and see what they are charging now.

Still, a drop from $1799 to $1349 in one week is...well, a great deal!

Interesting, if it's true. I was told that gun mfgrs set their prices at the begining of the year and don't alter them (typically, unless the dollar tanks even more). So someone wants to move inventory.

Maybe they are trying to ramp up for 516's, I can't see them actually paying less to make (per se), unless the beancounters decided they got their initial investment back, and they're pricing them to move units now.

I agree, but I do blame them, personally. Granted price is ultimately 'what people will pay', but living in one of the most expensive areas in the country, I'm accustomed to rediculously high prices "just because it's ______". One reason I buy elsewhere for everything I can :)! I don't agree at all with gouging 'just because people will pay'. I personally find that phillosphy a bit distasteful.

Yeah... makes me wonder if I should let myself think "I need" another one...
Sig did not lower prices on the 556.
Thank you TGS. For whatever their reason is for lowering prices and saying it was Sig, that's just not the case.

They will if and only if you purchased before they changed the rebate form that eliminated the LEO purchases. I think that date was jan 26th.
I paid $1420/shipped for my 556 DMR (net after rebate). I'm not finding that price anywhere out there.

I've decided I'd like another .223 rifle but in 16" (the blem SCAR for $2k is nice). Trying to decide what to get....a 556 Classic for less than $1K would be tempting.
I saw the blemished SCAR to. I know it makes no difference on how it shoots but if I am gonna drop 2K on something I want it right from the start new and not a mark on it.
