Shorter Gas System On An Older Sig 556

3390 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  407ForRent
I noticed that the new and improved Sig556 Patrol Rifle has a shortened gas system on it. Is there any way to get the shorter gas system installed on an older version of the Sig556. (i.e. get the parts and switch it out, get sig to install it, etc.)

FYI I own a Sig556 ER or 007 model. Not sure about the model or numbering cause I don't have my case or the gun with me at the moment so I'll describe it just so you know what I'm talking about - it's the model that came with the collapsible non-folding stock, toothpick BUIS and fixed front sight; no optics; fish-gill forearm.

Looking forward to hearing all your thoughts.

...new and improved ???

...it's a step backwards...why in the world would you want to put a pistol length gas system on a carbine ! ... :?
My thoughts were to lighten the load; what's the downside to putting a shorter gas system on a carbine length rifle?

By "new and improved" I meant that Sig had changed the design, not really commenting on its strengths or weaknesses.

New to EBRs so cut me some slack, i'm learning here. I've been a bolt action guy most of my life; that's how I learned so forgive me if I am playing the "dumb" guy in the room lol ;)
It isn't "dumb." The shorter gas system just causes the gun to operate a little more harshly and parts wear a bit faster.
But really, no big deal. The gun still works.
The AR is the same; the M4 carbine ("m4orgeries") are the same way.
hell,.. the whole reason i got my "swat" partol rifle was because it was better balanced and did not feel as front heavy as the regular gas system 556's

plus i plan to SBR it

ETA: to the OP,. i do not think you can switch to the short gas system without replacing the barrel,.

Yeah ... the gas hole would be in the wrong place in the barrel otherwise.
Cool, thanks for the info guys. I appreciate it.

I don't think you can do that because the barrel is too thin to thread a flash hider.

If I'm wrong I'd like to see one that was done because I'd like to have one also.
