I'm thinking of a base model saiga 12 shotgun for my next 'hysteria' gun purchase. Cheap, reliable, mags...

Anyone here have any thoughts/experience?

It's not a bad shotgun. For the price and availability though, you could buy one or two really nice Mossberg or Remingtons and customize them to your liking. That's just my personal opinion though. I love a good, cheap pump action shotgun and don't see the need to spend more than what's necessary. If you have the cash and want one, go for it.
Thanks for the response guys. I have a mossy 500 marine with a knoxx stock. Its my home defense gun, Was looking for a semi-auto combat type while I can still get one.
...i would pass on the saiga...

...my vote is for a HK marked Benelli M1S90 Tactical...with a factory 7+1 tube...

...my 2 cents... :p
all of the Benelli models are currently over inflated in price. especially the damn Supersport in 20ga that i want.
so you should bite the big one and find an m4 with skeleton stock to turn around and mark-up on Gunbroker.
No, i'm just kidding! I'm pissed b/c i didn't buy it two years ago when they were actually sitting on the local shop shelf at MSRP.
Grab a Super 90, you'll enjoy it.
Went with the saiga 12. Get it tomorrow, Thanks everyone for the advice.
Saiga 12 "range report"

Observatons on it after I took it to the range-

1) Ugly
2) Second most fun I ever had shooting a gun (full auto MP 40 is first)
3) Incredible firepower, cycles like a semi-auto rifle only instead 00 buck spraying out the end
4) Mag reload sucks

Best anology would be the real ugly girl you take home from the bar but end up have a ton of fun with and no regrets.

Overall, for a little over $600 a great buy.
I have two. They're stock, witht eh possible exception of 10 round mags. Getting 20 round drums next week *crosses fingers*. I love them, they don't kick so much as a pump, they're quick to load even without the bolt catch, and they're very accurate with slugs. Got the short 19 inch versions with full stocks. The stocks will go soon hopefully when funds allow ;)
At 600$, i'm thinking of grabbing another. Would love an MD20 drum for a reasonable price.

Just added this and am real happy with it-

Dude that underrail looks sweet. How hard is it to get on there? Mine are stock and I have NO experience with AK's whatsoever. AR-15's and 556's are easy to work on so I assume they should be easy as pie given the reputation of the AK right?
It was easy to do once someone told me how to remove the original foregrip.

Fits perfectly.
I've used a Saiga-12 in 3-gun matches since 2001 (less than $300 then)and once you get one and use it, you will forget about the overpriced Benelli and Remington shotguns. No, it's not pretty and it is different. Hence, a lot of people look down on what is an otherwise reliable and light-shooting shotgun. It's based on one of the most time-proven firearm designs and will cycle moderate-light loads to 3-inch magnum shells equally well without beating up the operator.
I finally got my Saiga out to a shooting clay place. These things are great, I don't know what's with their sights but they just work. The 19 inch guns point very naturally. It's like the 1911 of shotguns almost haha
Pinkfloyd-

How'd the clays go?

I bet that was fun. Did you open it up with a 12rd mag, lol?

I'm sorry to admit I was a little embarassed to take mine clay shooting at the range. Especially since I put the burris fastfire on it and swapped out the furniture.

BTW MD 20 just did another run and has the 20 round drums available for order.
I just got in two MD-20's actually. I was in the later part of the second order. They shoot okay tho they take some fandangling to get seated properly haha :p

Yeah I don't own any other shotguns; I was raised in a household where the Mini 14 was the best thing since sliced bread and my dad just bought his first shotgun when we went to a gunshow together last fall. It was a Remington 1100. Very nice gun. I bought two Saiga's, one for investment and one for defence.

I can't really imagine the Remington would be much better on clays; with the 5 round mags they're very quick on target and like I said, the gun points very naturally. Once I decide If I'm going to buy another gun I might consider converting from the fullstock to a folder. I hate the stock stock haha. It's really a piece of crap, but it gets the job done.

I wasn't all that embarrased at the range. I love my Saiga unabashedly; it's a great gun and I wish I had bought three or four. My GF complains about my obsession with firearms, but thats just me. I've always been into this kind of thing.

The only thing that bugs me about the Saiga's is the no last round hold open. I know there are aftermarket ones out there but it's still annoying. Makes mag changes that much slower :/

What sucks about it?

Im asking because I have a Bennelli M1 Super 90 with speedloader and I thought with the Saiga-12 10+ round magazines it would be faster and smoother to reload.

With the bolt closed it requires some technique to seat a loaded mag.
I've had my S12 for a month now and it has been sitting in the safe. Finally completed the parts I needed to do a half conversion. Half because I won't be moving the FCG but rather will be adding an external ACE folding stock:

I'll also replace the handguard with galil type. What mods did you do on yours?
