When I first read about the Magpul AFG and thumb-break hold, I was intrigued and decided to add it to my 556. [Thanks for the tips Zeus!] The problem was that the AFG wants to be mounted fairly far forward and my thumb would hit the small side rails on the fish gill stock. When my 522 arrived with a classic stock, I rigged the AFG to it and fell in love.

So, I decided to buy a Swiss 551 style stock and mount the AFG to a picatinny rail. Following is a report:

Tools Needed:
* Bench vice with lower receiver block or other gun vice
* Hand drill
* #8-32 tap and tap driver
* #29 drill bit (for #8-32 tap)
* 9/64 drill bit (to drill the stock)
* Cutoff saw or hack saw
* Machinist scribe
* Assorted: punches, allen head and hex wrenches
* Ball peen hammer
* Loctite blue
* Large flat file

Additional Parts Needed:
* SIG 551 style hand guards for the 556 (Top Gun Supply)
* Yankee Hill Machine 7â€

Mark,
I did the same thing,then I changed to a fishgill handguard and the AFG doesn't work. You need to change the pistol grip. I tried a hogue grip but it didn't work.

You can put the AFG on the fish gill guard, but you need to cut off the little winglets on the sides. I cut mine with a radial arm saw and it worked great. Zeus posted details and pics on this site.
