My 556 classic rifle is one that came with the front right already installed but only the wimpy flip up rear sight and the red dot (which I never installed). So I added the rear dipoter and have left it like that for years, but now I am using red dots on all my guns, so I want to use one on the 556. Can I just use it as-is, or will I need a high-rise mount and/or have to remove the front or rear diopter sight? If I have to co-witness, I would but not sure what my options are on the 556 for absolute or lower 1/3...LMK guys, thanks!

The classic has a longer sight radius. So I can’t tell you exactly but I can at least share what I have and hopefully it helps. I have a patrol swat and use an MRO in an ADM low mount. I also have the sig diopter. With the diopter set at the open “V” the dot floats above the post in the front loop if I have a decent cheek weld. It’s more a heads up position and not a solid cheek weld. If I use the set diopter settings 100/200/300 etc. looking through each peep will be some sort of a cowitness. I use a 200yard zero with most dots. So the dot hovers on above or below the tip of the post depending on setting. I have to have a good cheekweld when looking through the peeps.
I have played with the popsicle and the red dot. It definitely gives you a better heads up view.
I have tried higher mounts but the cheekweld for me is not ideal and the height over bore can start getting a tad too much.
Choice of red dot can make a difference as well. Initially I ran an Aimpoint Micro it worked well but I went with the bigger windowed MRO. It opens up the field of view and lets me run more heads up. Since almost all of my dots are on true return to zero mounts I have swapped others around from other rifles-and of varying heights. RMR’s on different height mounts were ok but I didn’t like the edge distortion. The Eotech and Holosun 510c don’t give any cowitness they are too tall. The 507’s in different mounts just made it too busy with circle dot and H&K style front. The MRO in low ADM seems to be the best for me since at least on this stick since I want some sort of a cowitness.

Thanks for all the replies...I have discovered that the fixed front hooded sight bothers me with a red dot so I am considering buying a set of the flip-up Samson sights. If I do, should i get the SP or A2 style rear sight???

I don't like the samson sig 556 sights. They never lined up correctly. The heights on the fronts and rears were so off i couldn't zero it. Just went with troy flip ups and mounted the front sight to the rail. Has been great for years.

Thanks for that info...I have the classic foregrip so no rail to mount to...what options does that leave me? I think the Troy flipup meant for the 556 gas block is no longer in production?

They may have improved as my experience was 10yrs ago. The problem was their gas block flip up was just to high. No matter if I used their rear flip up or another brand on 2 different rifles, the front sight post didn't have enough travel to even come close to aligning for a common 50/200 zero. Great concept, but I think there measurements were off. Maybe someone else has had a different experience that will chime in. As long as you can return it if it doesn't work or give them a ring to make sure. When it happened to me I called them and was able to return the sights. I wish I could have been given a solution vs having to send them back as it is a optimal set up if it would work. Best of luck.

Okay thanks...I really like the OEM front sight paired with the Sig accessory diopter rear sight, but I wanted to change due to re dot. HOWEVER, think I will hold off for now because I am influx on whether to keep my 5xx guns or not...My 516 is moving towards the AR platform, so even if I keep the 556 as a backup/braggin rights rifle, I may just keep it as an iron sight rifle and therefor no need for the folding sights because no red dot. We'll see...thx again.

I use on both of my 556 rifles the MFI flip up "BLADES" and a diopter rear. The blade will fold down out of the way and lives on the gas block and not the rail so saves room on my SBR.
