I've decided to get a real scope for my full size 556. I'm not going to shoot it further than 300 yards and more likely around 100-150 yards. I'd like to spend around $750 or less. What power scope would work and what brand. Spending less is always better... Thanks.

I am in the same market and looking at:

Leupold AR
Bushnell Banner
Crossfire

I would also like to keep my front hooded iron sight, so curious what best mount would be?
Never been in military, but noticed all of their scoped weapons still have large iron sights, even the snipers. This makes sense if something happens to scope, so there must be a market for scope mounts that marry with the sig hooded front?

I'm curious what you end up with, my budget is around $300 (which I think I should be able to get good scope). I have bolt actions with high-end scope for situations over 200 yards.

...IMO...a 3.5-10...3-12...or 4.5-14 or so would be a very flexable power range for your purposes...

...the Leupold AR series are nice scopes...i would go with the fine duplex...less complicated and you can easily dial in any corrections...

... http://swfa.com/Leupold-4-12x40-Mark-AR ... 44575.aspx

...this is one of their least expensive "field grade" tactical scopes with a 30mm tube...and an "excellent" value for the money...this is a very very very good scope !

...don't be fooled by other manufacturer's claims...or reviews by those that don't know any better...you need to spend some money for good field grade scope with good glass...and more importantly...for what you're getting inside the tube !

...in all honesty...i would go with the Leupold 4.5-14x40 Mark 4 LRT...at around $750...you are getting a whole lot of scope...with a "true" lifetime warrenty...

What do we think about the Trijicon 1-4x24 Accu-Point TR24?
...the Trijicon is a good scope...but will you be happy with only a 4 x out to 300 yards ???

...if you decide to go with a low power variable with an illuminated reticle...i would really take a hard look at this scope...

...the entire Vari X III line are excellent scopes...and IMO will serve you just as well as their tactical series...only question is...is 5 x (actually 4.5x) enough magnification for you when shooting out to 300 yards...

Ullie is right [stunner, I know] - I own the Leupold VX III 1.5-5 x 20 rifle scope and it probably isn't enough magnification out at 300 yards (I would go to 9x or 10x out that far) - at least for my eyes, and I have 20/15 vision with my prescription shooting glasses on....

The VX III 1.5-5 x 20 is great for fast target acquisition close in [100 to 200 yards] and it really works great in low light or twilight conditions. Lightweight, tough, lifetime guarantee, clear optics, wide field of view, large area eye box so you don't get "scoped" (impact cut) under heavy recoil [happens to rookies a lot], and great eye relief at lower magnification settings. Hard to beat combination on a carbine. I really like mine - and it works for hunting or tactical use, as Ullie also notes. But I think you need a more powerful scope once you pass ~250 yards....

Gents, Had a chance to try out my Classic this weekend with it's VX-3 1.5 X 5 X 20 MM ill ret. The scope model is Leupolds 66625. This little jewel is outstanding and clear as a bell. I used a laser device at home to dial it in somewhat then at the range I sat out a target at 25 yrds. then on to 100 yards. I picked up a few boxes of Hornady 75 gr, BTHP Match and used them to sight it in. When everything was adjusted in the Sig could knock out the center of the target. This weapon is much better than I thought it would be and is only limited by me and my ability. Leupolds new VX-3 line of scopes is the next step in quality and I couldn't be happier with it and the results. The sight picture is extremely clear and clean, very bright which I was suprised at for a scope at this price range. As far as using it out to 300 yards, I would go with something like a Mark 4, 4.5 X 14 X 50mm LR/T or the 40 MM model if price is a concern.

For what it's worth, I'll be putting a Nikkon Buckmaster 4-9x40 scope on mine mounted on a LaRue Tactical mount for quick removal/install with zero being maintained. I currently have the Nikkon on my Tikka and anything within 300 yards is money. So far, I have a buck (95 yds), a doe (100 yd head shot) and a Mouflon Ram (135 yds). What you see is what you get when looking in the glass.

And speaking of money, it will set you back about $220. Not bad for budget-hunters.
