Had to leave the 556 in a home without a safe recently, and removed the bolt handle and dropped it in my pocket to keep anyone from using the gun. When I was replacing it, I realized that as it separates the bolt from the spring and piston rod, it makes the gun totally unable to function. Just wondered if anyone else had thought of it.

Yes, and it is a good idea to have a couple of spares in case you lose it too!

Yes I have done the same thing for safety reasons. I usually transport both of mine that way so it doesn't dig into the padding of my Voodoo case. Once while at the range, a buddy of mine who's an Army Ranger picked mine up out of the case, looked at it a while, then came over to me and said, "how the fuck do operate this thing?" Funny as all hell - I handed him the charging handle and it was the first time I finally didn't feel intimidated by his expertise!
