This basically ups the .223 75 grain BTHP to NATO velocities.

And it ups the 5.56mm NATO to SUPERNATO velocities :!: :!: :!:

Wish we could get some of that powder for reloading....

One thing it ain't is Wolf, Tula, Bear, Golden Tiger, etc.

Just a shame that the reloading components will not be available for retail, I would like to get ahold of 30 pounds of the gunpowder they are using in these high powered rounds! 8)

I might pickup up about 6 or 7 boxes to have around as well. They look pretty good.

I love this in .308 so I'm sure I will like it in both 223 and 22-250.

I just bought a couple boxes of 75gr TAP but I think I'm going to have to get a couple of these to try. I'm also going to have to try some 22-250.

I too wish we could buy the powder they developed for the various rounds. I'm just now starting on my reloading for rifle rounds journey. I've loaded and shot a couple thousand 223 so far and that went well. Next up is volume 22-250 in hopes of a prairie dog trip next year.

I think santa is bringing me a single stage press for Christmas so it will be easier for me to hopefully load some precision 22-250 and 308 rounds. That is where I would love to try this powder...

I need to buy a .308 rifle so I have an excuse to buy .308 ammo!

Well, I am really bad about jumping off the deep end whenever I get in to some new kind of hobby. Although I've shot pistols and shotguns since I was big enough to hold them I've never had any real rifle experience (22 plinking doesn't count)

So, for 308 I bought a relatively inexpensive gun. If I find I like precision distance shooting, and if I prove that I can out shoot the cheap one then I will see about getting something else. So far I've spent more time with my 556 and the 22-250 so maybe for once I made a smart move...

I am thinking about investing in the SCAR -17S, so this ammo in .308 might be a good fit for it along with other ammo I can purchase just for the range.

I think that is great. It will probably be too pricey for general shooting but for precision or hunting rounds I think it will be great.

Maybe we should start a e-mail blitz to try to get them to send you some so you can develop a load using 75 gr bullets...

    You bet I will.

Hodgdon has the new spherical SUPERPERFORMANCE powder listed as one of the slowest burning powders produced by any manufacturer, way slower than all the other powders listed for use in heavy OTM .223/5.56mm loadings.

Any idea what the cost of the powder runs?

No, it is not supposed to go on sale to the general public until the middle of January, 2011.

Too bad it's not out before Christmas, it'd make a great gift!

Just ordered 10 boxes of the 5.56mm NATO 75 ammo, the powder will not be available until next year.

Should make some great bacon :!: :!: :!:

Wow! I am surprised at the price. I expected it to be $24+ a box for a good time but $17 right out of the gate is almost unbelievable.

Do you think there is a barrel length where you loose the benefit of the slow burning Superformance powder? With a 24" barrel I'm sure it's great. I'm curious to see the speeds out of a 16" barrel compared with their equivalent TAP ammo.

Re: Wow - Hornady Super Performance 75 grain 5.56mm NATO Amm

It is over 130 fps faster out of a 20" barrel (2,930fps) than the prevous high powered TAP 5.56mm NATO ammo and the muzzle energy is up from 1,240 to 1,430 foot pounds.

That is a serious increase and is going to easily be over 2,850 fps out of a 16" barrel -> it does not get any better than that :!:

Maybe when I get some of the powder I'll be able to replicate that data, but there is simply nothing that can touch that out there now.

Re: Wow - Hornady Super Performance 75 grain 5.56mm NATO Amm

    Skypup,

Have you tested the Superformance ammo out of a 16" barrel yet? In a conversation with a very knowledgeable barrel maker I was told that I probably shouldn't expect nearly as much of an increase in MV out of a shorter barrel (<20-22 in). I believe this had to do with the slower burn rate for the Superformance powder, which may not help too much out of a shorter barrel. However, I haven't had a chance to chrony any yet. If you get an opportunity to test it out of a 16" barrel, I'd love to hear the results...I'm always on the lookout for a hundred extra fps!

I should add that I chrony'd some Silver State Armory 5.56-77 gr through my 21", 1 in 10" DMR this weekend and was pleasantly surprised to get 2803 +/- 63 fps from it (FGMM 77 gr gave a rather mediocre 2518 +/- 33 fps).

Re: Wow - Hornady Super Performance 75 grain 5.56mm NATO Amm

That Silver State ammo is good to go, but the stated velocity for the Hornady 5.56mm NATO SuperPerformance ammo is listed as out of a 20" barrel @ 2,930 fps. So the decrease for a 16" barrel will still put it over 2,800fps and close to 2,850 fps. I don't have a chrono, but if you order some of the new ammo you'll have to tell us what speed you are getting out of your DMR.

It is one of the slowest burning powders of all powders made on the list of published burn rates, slower than any other powder listed for the .223/5.56mm.

I just ordered some last week so should have it sometime this week.
