This weekend i took my xi out to the desert with a bunch of water filled milk jugs to see how the ammo i had penetrated and performed at 25 yards and 100 yards. I tested xm556fbit3, le223t3, fusion msr, xm855 and silver bear. All are 62 grain soft points except for the 855 62 gr fmj. At 25 yards all penetrated 4 jugs. The 855 5 jugs. All the soft points mushroomed nicely. The fusion mushroomed more jaggedly and had a petal fragment off. 855 just made a 22 size hole. The difference came at 100 yards. The fbit3 and le223t3 bondeds as well as the fusion still penetrated 4 jugs and held perfect mushrooms. Silver bear pentrated 3 and musroomed nice. The xm855 put neat tiny 22 size hole in 2 and changed direction out the side. My conclusion is that m855 sucks other than for training and storage ammo. Federal bondeds fbi t3, le223t3 and fusion msr are awesome. I recommend fusion msr because its a dollar cheaper per round and performs very similar to the bondeds. Silver bear works really good also for a bulk priced round. I was able to get a 1" 100 yard group with the fusion msr from my xi. Im very happy with this round.

What an awesome report! You rock.

855 is a Mil spec designed specific for the M16/M4 with a mass to prevent tumbling. It will have good stability and what it lacks in velocity in makes up for in penetration from shorter barrels. Not necessarily the best hunting round, but very plentiful and cheap. No less lethal in well placed shots in the vitals.

Wikki, (you know they are all experts at Wikki) says this:
"In 1977, NATO members signed an agreement to select a second, smaller caliber cartridge to replace the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge.[9] Of the cartridges tendered, the 5.56×45mm NATO was successful, but not the 55 gr M193 round used by the U.S. at that time. The wounds produced by the M193 round were so devastating that many[10] consider it to be inhumane.[11][12] Instead, the Belgian 62 gr SS109 round was chosen for standardization. The SS109 used a heavier bullet with a steel tip and had a lower muzzle velocity for better long-range performance, specifically to meet a requirement that the bullet be able to penetrate through one side of a steel helmet at 600 meters. This requirement made the SS109 (M855) round less capable of fragmentation than the M193 and was considered more humane.["
"Combat operations the past few months have again highlighted terminal performance deficiencies with 5.56×45mm 62 gr. M855 FMJ. These problems have primarily been manifested as inadequate incapacitation of enemy forces despite them being hit multiple times by M855 bullets. These failures appear to be associated with the bullets exiting the body of the enemy soldier without yawing and fragmenting."
